Free Journalism Workshop

Brighton Journalist Works are running a free journalism workshop on Monday 5 July 2010 where you can find out everything that you need to know about starting a career in journalism. At the workshop you will learn how to write a news story, get tips and feedback from, and learn how to start your journalism career. Experience a day in the life of a journalist and decide whether a career in journalism is the correct path for you.

Journalist Works is based in the office of Brighton’s daily newspaper, The Argus, and you will go on a tour of the Argus newsroom. A further workshop will be available in September. Monday 28 June to Friday 6 August 2010
· Open 12-4pm, Wednesday late opening until 6pm
· Advisers available for quick queries 12-2 and appointments 2-4pm, until 6pm on Wednesdays
· Service closed Wednesday 14 July for staff training
· Opening early from 10am during Graduation; Wednesday 21 to Friday 23 July

Monday 9 August to Friday 3 September 2010
Advisers available by phone, Information Centre closed

Monday 6 September to Friday 1 October 2010
· Open 12-4pm, Wednesday late opening until 6pm

Investment banking event for female first years


Fresh Look is an informal event which sets out to raise awareness of the different sorts of careers available within investment banking for candidates from all academic disciplines. This will involve a mixture of presentations, panel discussions and personal networking. Open to all first year female students, the event takes place in central London on 21 July 2010 and if students are travelling from outside the M25, travel expenses will be reimbursed. Sustainable Careers event

Sustainable Careers Explored is taking place on 14 July 2010 at the Old Ship Hotel, Brighton. It's aimed at companies, job seekers, students and individuals interested in a career in sustainable construction, low carbon technologies, energy efficiency and renewables. The presentations will explore the opportunities arising in careers across a wide spectrum of industries, with insights from key professionals working in all aspects of sustainability

Free coaching from Logica senior managers

Will you be looking for employment in 2011? Logica are offering free employability skills coaching. Logica is a business and technology service company, employing 39,000 people across 36 countries. Senior managers are looking to hone their skills by offering coaching to undergraduates and postgraduates at no cost, specifically focused on helping you with your search for employment. Whilst Logica have their own graduate scheme, the offer of coaching does not have to mean you are looking for a job within Logica or the IT or Consultancy Services sector.

IPA Creative Summer School

There are only two days left to submit your applications for the IPA Creative Summer School. The Creative Summer School runs from 5 July to 6 August and provides an excellent opportunity for students to experience life in our industry by spending five weeks working as a creative in a top advertising agency.

The Creative Summer School is aimed at UK students between years two and three of their degree course, but applications will be accepted from third year students and recent grads. Deadline is 18 June 2010 and more information and the application details can be found here.

Careers Advice Webinar 17 June


How can you improve your chances of getting that job? Is your CV well-presented? Do you know what to include in a covering letter? How can you make the best first impression at your first interview? Futurising Event for Creative Graduates






Futurising, the two day festival of opportunity for the creative industry takes place on 29 and 30 June 2010 at the Nicholls & Clarke Building in Shoreditch. The event includes talks, one-to-one sessions, recruitment and networking opportunities and competitions offering incredible opportunities for attendees.

Entry is free for those who have registered in advance but an admission fee is needed for some of the talks. A full list of speakers and further information can be found on the Futurising website and updates through their twitter feed.

New MSc in Global Health at Sussex

Brighton and Sussex Medical School's new MSc in Global Health have places available for October 2010.

Open to finalists of all disciplines (expecting a first or 2:1), this vibrant programme will equip individuals to contribute to the improvement of health and the achievement of equity in health worldwide.

Courses include: poverty, inequalities and health, climate change and health and the relationship between disease, globalisation and global governance.

The course is a full time, one year modular taught course, although a part-time option is available.

Brighton Journalist Works is running a free journalism workshop on Saturday 19 June 2010 where you can find out everything that you need to know about starting a career in journalism.

Concordia is a local organisation offering international volunteering opportunities to young people. They'll be in the Careers and Employability Centre on Monday 7 June 2010 at 1pm when you can find out how to take part in their programmes.

Question & Answer Day at Inner Temple

On Sunday June 13 2010 there's an event at Inner Temple Hall, London for students interested in a career at the Bar. There will be
workshops on training for the Bar, funding & scholarships, writing a legal CV, life as a pupil, Pupillage Portal, interview tips, life as a junior tenant in chambers & life at the Employed Bar

Opening Times Thursday 3 June

The Careers and Employability Centre will close at 3pm tomorrow, 3 June 2010. There will also be no short interviews with advisers. This is because our staff are involved in the TLDU Conference and Employer Engagement Forum.

We reopen on Friday at 10am, apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Events for Finalists

Over the next few weeks we are running dozens of events for finalists and graduands. These include a CVs & Applications Briefing, a session on Local Job Hunting and one on Job Search for International Students. A full list can be found on our events listing and although they're aimed at finalists, all students are welcome.

Volunteers Week


It's Volunteers Week 1-7 June celebrating the contribution that millions of volunteers make across the UK. The Week plays a huge part in raising the profile of volunteers who regularly contribute to society, while inspiring others to get involved too.

If you are interested in volunteering you can find information on finding opportunities and how to make the most of volunteering on our website. It's also worth calling in to Project V, Sussex's community volunteering scheme as they have lots of summer projects available. It's based in the USSU Activities Centre round the corner from the Careers and Employability Centre in Falmer House.

Channel 4 - Journalism Trainee Scheme Bursary

Channel 4 in conjunction with City University London are offering a great opportunity for budding journalists.
They are looking for enthusiastic graduates with a passion for news and current affairs... They're also looking to better reflect Britain’s multi-cultural society, so are particularly encouraging people with knowledge of the Pakistani, Bangladeshi or African-Caribbean communities to apply.
