Career Doctor - Getting into Law
I’m not studying Law can I still qualify as a solicitor or barrister?
Yes. There is a postgraduate conversion course which brings you to the same starting point as Law graduates. It’s called the CPE or GDL and you can take it here at Sussex! It’s a well-recognised route into Law and employers value the experience and skills that non-law graduates bring to the profession.
What are my chances of success in a Law career?
It’s a competitive area so gaining as much work experience as possible is a must! It’s also important to gain this experience well before you need to apply for jobs and to be aware of early deadlines in the profession. Come into the Careers & Employability Centre to find out more and make a plan of action.
I want to work as a human rights lawyer – is this possible?
Yes, but you will need persistence and relevant experience. You’ll need to qualify as a solicitor or barrister ideally training with a firm with a Human Rights focus. In addition voluntary/paid work with a relevant NGO or institution is essential and sometimes a relevant postgraduate course. It’s worth considering a back up plan – are you interested in other areas of Law or other aspects of Human Rights work such as campaigning or fundraising?
I am studying Law but don’t want to be a solicitor or barrister
Aside from other roles in the legal profession (legal executive, paralegal etc) there are loads of jobs suitable for Law graduates. Reports suggest that around two thirds of graduate jobs are open to people from any degree discipline. That means you can chose which skills you want to continue using in future jobs. Come in and see us to generate some ideas.
What about the recession- have law firms been affected and how does it affect me?
Some law firms have asked their trainee solicitors to defer training contracts for a year and some have restricted their recruitment. Other firms have seen an increase in applications for their vacation schemes. It has been reported recently in the media that firms have “weathered the storm” but it is difficult to get an overall picture. Keep building on your legal experience as much as you can and you will be well placed to make an application when firms recruit again.
