Infrequently Asked Questions: Where can I find courses to learn Arabic in Syria or Lebanon?

A: Try searching Language Schools or Worldwide Classroom. In Syria, there is IRAMES, which offers an intensive 5/6 month course and has links with international University departments. Or To Learn Arabic, which offers courses from beginner to advanced. Arabesk is another with strong international links. The IQRA Institute offers programmes in Damascus, but is also based in Lebanon, where it offers a 1 year course in Arabic. The Lebanese American University in Beirut offers an intensive 6 week summer course (for all levels) and 15 week fall course (for intermediate and advanced)

Top Tips: Travelling Abroad

Yes
Do your research. Arranging it yourself will be cheaper than going through a company, but there will be a lot of organising to do. If you do get someone else to organise everything for you, shop around. There’s a wide variety of prices. If you are volunteering in developing countries, you may want to think about some ethical considerations e.g. Does it work with local partner organisations and invest in its volunteer programmes

No
Don’t forget the red tape. Make sure you have the correct visas, particularly if you want to work outside the EU. Don’t take risks with your health. Make sure you get any jabs you need in plenty of time. If you are volunteering, don’t lose sight of the fact that it’s not a holiday. But don’t forget to have fun too!

I want to be a ... Pro Surfer

Why?
You spend your time surfing and hanging around on beaches in the free gear you get from your sponsors. There is a great deal of travel involved, usually to places warmer than Britain

How?
Sam Lamiroy states that "Surfing's more about adaptive skills than pure physical endurance and fitness. It's almost like a martial art. The sea is a quickly changing environment, so you have to be artistic, creative, and able to interpret your surroundings. If you want to make a living from it, you have to be smart and know what your sponsors want. You're constantly dealing with people, so you need to be genial and professional." If you haven't been surfing from a young age you are unlikely to make it as a professional. A clear way to get into pro surfing is through competitions which are listed in places like
Drift Magazine, higher level events include the ASP World Qualifying Series for pro surfers. If you don't make it as a professional there are Surfing Instruction jobs with group like Flying Fish

Where?
Talent and practice are important so check the
surfing conditions for training. Lists of surf schools and job vacancies in the industry can be found at Surfer's Village
Check out CDEC’s
Work and Study abroad information as well as our jobs database for relevant vacation work. We also have a new Volunteer and Work abroad section in our foyer with takaway information on relevant volunteering or work schemes and gap year projects

Infrequently Asked Questions: Where can I find a list of public sector consultants?

A: Use the Management Consultancies Association’s Careers with Members search page. Under ‘Industry Sectors’ you will find central government, local government, NHS and other public bodies. You can also search by size of consultancy or whether they recruit recent graduates, offer internships or have current vacancies. You could also look at the Institute of Business Consulting’s member list. You cannot search by specialism, but many of them do work with public sector agencies, so it’s worth checking

I want to be a ... Government Lawyer

Why?
The government legal service will appeal to those interested in the blend of politics and law; who want to be at the heart of the legislative process. It provides an alternative legal career for those who don’t want to work in the city and are public spirited and helpful with a broad outlook. Government lawyers tend to have a varied career path open to them using their transferable legal skills within different departments rather than specialising for life. The pay tends to be lower than for corporate law but this is balanced by regular working hours, the possibility of flexible working and other benefits associated with working for the government

How?
You apply to the Government Legal Service as you would any other legal firm; at the end of your second year of a Law degree or just before you start your conversion course.
GLS were present at LawFair on 11th November as were the CPS. Hope you were able to chat with them on the day!

Where?
Similar public sector law careers can be found in the
Crown Prosecution Service and local government. Also check out CDEC’s general law links page here

Infrequently Asked Questions: Finding companies that promote/organise musical events in Brighton

Start with Creative Brighton. It contains a list of organisations involved in different types of music in the city. Brighton Music Network estimates there are 1000+ contemporary rock and pop bands with around 200 venues that programme live music. Melting Vinyl put on loads of great gigs and take on work experience people. Email them with contact details and a bit about yourself. If you want to get involved in events, the Brighton Festival Fringe takes on volunteers. Quite a few of these seem to have gone on to paid jobs in the industry, so it’s a great start. Harmony in the Community is also worth checking out. They have worked with Loop and Brighton Carnival and also have a volunteer programme base around event production

I want to work in.... Music PR

Why?
You feel at home in pubs, clubs and gigs and find it easy to chat to strangers. You are thrilled by the thought of backstage parties, record launches and awards ceremonies. You yearn for the satisfaction of seeing one of your bands on the cover of the NME and knowing it was down to you

How?
Qualifications are less important than aspects of personality in PR. You’ll need to be diplomatic and thick skinned, able to work late and still get up for work the next day. Starting out in the industry will generally involve the less glamorous aspects of the job like media research and office admin. If you want to get into music PR then it is important to research the area thoroughly - familiarise yourself with the music press and the music sections of the main newspapers, who the journalists are and what music tastes and focuses they have. If applying to a PR company check which acts they look after, listen to them and develop opinions on them, do they have a USP?

Where?
Work experience is key to getting into PR and we have a booklet on the subject in the media section of CDEC’s information centre in Falmer House. Also find a list of relevant books we carry on CDEC’s
Shelfari page
Check out CDEC’s Careers pages for more information about working in PR and in the music industry

Web Review: Johnny Bunko

Johnny Bunko.com is the website tie-in to the career guide manga released earlier this year written by Daniel Pink and drawn by Rob Ten Pas. Similar to the book the website expounds the six lessons 1) There is no plan, 2) Think strengths not weaknesses, 3) It’s not about you 4) Persistence trumps talent, 5) Make excellent mistakes, and 6) Leave an imprint. These are sufficiently vague to allow a variety of interpretations and applications to careers and this is where the blog is especially interesting. Bunko Breakfasts are held by groups in different industries and organisations and the attendees discuss their views on the rules. Definitely a useful site to check out when thinking about career and personal development choices. Be sure to read the book too; we have several copies in CDEC

Top Tips: Early Deadlines

Yes
If you know what you want to do, start looking now. If you want to get into finance there are lots of pre-Christmas deadlines. The same with advertising. If you are interested in the public sector, there are November deadlines for Fast Stream Civil Service and NHS Management, amongst others. Check CDEC’s
Jobs for Finalists and our list of other jobs sites. Some sites list jobs by deadline (Milkround, Inside Careers)

No
Don’t panic! You may be able to register for email updates or subscribe to RSS feeds for the latest jobs in your chosen sector/s (
Targetjobs), so you won’t miss out. Don’t take a scattergun approach and start applying for everything. It’s better to spend some time working out what you want to do, and researching employers, then make a few quality applications
