Brighton Music Network estimates there are 1000+ contemporary rock and pop bands with around 200 venues that programme live music. Melting Vinyl put on loads of great gigs and take on work experience people. Email them with contact details and a bit about yourself. If you want to get involved in events, the Brighton Festival Fringe takes on volunteers. Quite a few of these seem to have gone on to paid jobs in the industry, so it’s a great start. Harmony in the Community is also worth checking out. They have worked with Loop and Brighton Carnival and also have a volunteer programme base around event production
